ZAGREB, Oct 15 (Hina) - The cause of death of patients in eight
Croatian haemodialysis centres is linked to the use of dialysers
with filters by the same manufacturer and from the same series,
according to reports by both the health minister and Interior
Ministry officials, it was said at an emergency government session
on Monday.#L#
Investigation has shown that Pliva diol series P-15 and P-18 was
used for the dialysis of all the casualties. The device is
manufactured for and delivered to the domestic drugs company Pliva
by the United States company Baxter, Deputy Interior Ministry Josip
Vresk said.
Health Minister Ana Stavljenic-Rukavina said that in the wake of
last week's tragedy, all centres had been supplied with other
equipment, considered to be safe. There have been no reports of new
casualties, she added.
The government adopted conclusions calling for a thorough
investigation of the whole case. It insisted there be no
concealment or hasty work, and urged competent health officials to
ensure safe haemodialyses.
The government will do everything to protect the rights of patients
and the casualties' families with just pecuniary compensation, and
be the first to ensure the initial financial support to the families
of the patients who died.
Twenty-three patients died during or a few hours after
haemodialyses in eight centres between Oct. 8 and 13. According to
medical experts, the death of two is probably not related to the
procedure and the use of the contested dialysers, it was said at
today's government session.
