ZAGREB, Oct 12 (Hina) - A project of privatising Croatian hotel and
tourism companies which is being drawn up by the Croatian Tourism
Ministry and the Croatian Privatisation Fund in cooperation with
the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is
definitely the strongest investment and development project for
Croatian tourism to date. Its implementation is expected to start
within a month at the most, Tourism Minister Pave Zupan Ruskovic
said on Friday.
She stressed the goal of the project is to bring into Croatia
renowned world hotel chains which have so far not shown great
interest in Croatian hotel and tourism companies.
The project is aimed at long-term privatisation making Croatian
hotel and tourism companies more valuable as to finally bring about
progress to Croatian tourism, as opposed to the "plethora" of ways
of implementing privatisation so far which have caused
dissatisfaction and damage, the minister asserted.
The plan would include some hotels in Crikvenica, the "Imperial"
hotel company from the Island of Rab, almost all Opatija hotels
owned by the "Liburnija Rivijera Hoteli", the "Suncani Hvar",
hotels owned by the "Korcula" company, some hotels in Split, the
"Zivogosce" hotel company from Igran and the Dubrovnik-based hotel
company "Plat".
The main idea of the entire project is to create several new hotel
chains from the companies, which would be managed by a holding
company. Every chain would be oriented towards a certain branch of
tourism, and when ready, it would be sold to a related world hotel
chain.
The role of the EBRD in the project is to find recognisable investor
partners to purchase Croatian hotels. The German development
agency DEG would carry out the operative tasks, and the Croatian
state would grant stock.
In all this Croatia does not want a classic loan relationship, but
rather wishes to tie investors to the ownership part to share the
job risk, Ruskovic stressed.
