NEW YORK, Oct 1 (Hina) - The all-round condemnation of terrorism
must be swiftly transformed into practical steps against it, and in
this the U.N. has to develop mechanisms for monitoring the
implementation of Security Council anti-terrorist conventions and
decisions, a Croatian ambassador said on Monday.
Participating in a debate on the fight against terrorism at the 56th
United Nations General Assembly, Croatia's Ivan Simonovic said the
perpetrators of the recent terrorist crimes in the United States
must be brought to justice and prevented from causing another
tragedy.
"(The UN) Charter indicates that terrorism is a threat to
international peace and that every country has solemn rights to
defend itself, its citizens and their peace and security,"
Simonovic said.
"Our motto... should be: multilateralism against terrorism. We
should set aside many of our differences, and concentrate on a
common goal - the global eradication of terrorism, once and for
all," the ambassador said.
He acquainted the participants in the debate with Croatian
President Stipe Mesic's appeal to clearly set the joint basic
values and principles of a world alliance against terrorism.
On Croatia's behalf, Simonovic vowed participation in that
struggle, accepting and enforcing international conventions and
full cooperation in the implementation of various anti-terrorist
measures. He also supported the Council of Europe Parliamentary
Assembly's view that the new International Criminal Court could be
an appropriate institution to consider terrorist acts.
