NEW YORK, Sept 24 (Hina) - The challenges of the 21st century,
including terrorism, impose the need for changes in the work of the
United Nations. In these issues, Croatia supports the efforts of
Secretary General Kofi Annan, Croatian Ambassador to the UN, Ivan
Simonovic, said at the UN General Assembly session in New York
Monday.
Simonovic was among the first participants of a discussion on
Annan's annual report on the work of the UN.
He advocated that the UN participate as much as possible in
preventing conflicts and disputes, and not just to react when they
escalate.
The Ambassador spoke about the problems in development and solving
poverty issues, important steps in the globalisation of human
rights, and the development of international judicial
institutions.
Simonovic assessed that the arrest and upcoming trial to former
Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic and the support to the
permanent International Criminal Court were proof of the creation
of a "new international legal order".
The discussion on Annan's report at the General Assembly in a way
replaced a postponed general discussion which was to be held this
week, with the participation of heads of states, prime ministers or
foreign ministers of member-countries.
After the secretary-general read a summary of his annual report,
Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov opened the discussion. He
spoke about a coordinated international action against terrorism.
He warned, however, that this was only one in a line of issues with
which the modern world must deal in a joint effort.
