DEMOCRATIC CENTRE AGAINST DISMISSAL OF POLICE OFFICERS

ZAGREB, Aug 9 (Hina) - Democratic Centre Vice President Josko Moric on Thursday said the putting of surplus police at the government's disposal was a bureaucratic formulation which served as a curtain for the dismissal of police officers without any criteria. Moric, an assistant to the interior minister during the 1990s HDZ (Croatian Democratic Union) rule in Croatia, told police officers who received notices making them available to the government to "protest, persistently and in different ways, but peacefully and with dignity, just as for ten years they allowed the protests of those who are now dismissing them". Asked if he could have influenced the police, as a former Interior Ministry officer, not to employ people who did not complete high school, Moric answered affirmatively. He added that in 1990-1 "50 people per hour" were accepted to the police, i.e. everyone who for patriotic reasons wished to part

He added that in 1990-1 "50 people per hour" were accepted to the police, i.e. everyone who for patriotic reasons wished to participate in the defence of the country from Serbian aggression. It has been said there are 3,800 surplus police officers, although it is known there are over 800 vacancies at the Interior Ministry following an economising programme. The Interior Ministry has surplus labour, but they are not police officers, Moric said. (hina) np ha
