Trial resumes for war crimes in Tovarnik

VUKOVAR, May 27 (Hina) - The trial against Milos Stanimirovic and another 13 Croatian Serb rebels accused of genocide and war crimes in the eastern Croatian town of Tovarnik resumed before the County Court in Vukovar on Friday.

Witness Pero Markanovic spoke about what he had heard about the death of his father Ivo after Tovarnik fell into the hands of Serb rebels, supported by the then Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), on 20 September 1991.

He said that other residents who had remained in Tovarnik had told him that his father had been beaten to death. Markanovic said he remembered his father's shirt, which they found at his exhumation, completely stained with blood.

Another witness spoke about his wife's murder.

All indictees are beyond the reach of Croatia's judiciary.
