The letter of intent, said Linic, proves that the government wants dialogue and partnership with businessmen in the challenges awaiting the Croatian economy. Opening up and connecting to Europe and the world in terms of economy requires a competitive economy on both on the foreign and domestic market, Linic said. Before the summer holidays the government will adopt concrete measures for eliminating administrative obstacles to the economic development, Linic added. Under the letter of intent, the Council will conduct an analysis and identify restrictions Croatian companies are faced with and suggest initiatives to the government, which would consider and accept them as the basis for its activities. The Competitiveness Council gathers the heads of 15 companies from the most important economic sectors (banking, pharmaceutical, textile, food and computer industries etc.) The Council has been supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development, which has been sponsoring a year-long project called "Croatian Initiative for Competitiveness". The project is aimed at stimulating cooperation with the government, presenting initiatives, reducing administrative barriers to investments, employment and export, strengthening public institutions which provide supporting services, and improving the strategic positions of chosen industrial sectors. The American mission in Croatia, said US Ambassador Lawrence Rossin, is determined to support Croatia in its development and the growth of its private sector, and an increase in competitiveness is an integral part of that process. Rossin also mentioned the example of the United States, where a similar council for the competitiveness policy played an important role in the country's economic recovery. The said project will be implemented by the U.S. consulting company J.E. Austin & Associates. (hina) rml
