VOJNIC, July 4 (Hina) - A large group of Bosnian Croat settlers in
Vojnic near Karlovac, about 60 kilometres south-east of Zagreb, on
Wednesday morning again tried to prevent the establishment of the
municipal council, but this time the police enabled the entrance of
Serb councillors into the municipal council building.
Intervention police forces were already on their positions as
protesters began gathering in front of the building but the Serb
councillors managed to enter the building only after a third police
squad was called in. The protesters, armed with a large quantity of
eggs, which showered the place, carried banners saying "Stop the
Architects of the so-called Chetnik Krajina" and chanted songs
glorifying Ustasha leaders.
Still, the prevailing view among the protesters was that they did
not want to contest election results or the allocation of seats in
the municipal council in line with those results, including the
appointment of Serb councillors.
Mirko Idjan, one of the protesters, said they want the government to
prevent the parties which have won mandates in the municipal
council from appointing Branko Eremic, Vlado Korac, Milan Loncar
and Vlasta Ljepovic as councillors because they hold them
responsible for participating in the aggression against Croatia.
Two weeks ago, Croat settlers thwarted the initial attempt to
establish the Vojnic municipal council by preventing the
councillors of the Serb Democratic Independent Party (SDSS), the
Serb People's Party (SNS) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP)
from entering the building, accusing the SDP of openly advocating
the taking over of authority in Vojnic together with Serb parties.
In the May municipal election in Vojnic, previously ruled by the
HDZ, the HDZ won five mandates, the SDP five, the SDSS two and the
SNS one.
