BELGRADE, June 29 (Hina) - Several thousand supporters of Slobodan
Milosevic and his party and the Radical Party of Vojislav Seselj
staged a rally in Belgrade on Friday, protesting against
Milosevic's hand-over to the U.N. war crimes tribunal for former
Yugoslavia in The Hague.
The protesters arrived in Belgrade aboard buses from several
Serbian towns. They carried banners with Milosevic's image, party
flags, and Serbian, Yugoslav and communist flags.
Radical Party leader Vojislav Seselj told a news conference today
that by extraditing Milosevic Yugoslav President Vojislav
Kostunica and Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic carried out a
"coup d'etat", which is why, he "threatened", they will have to go
to prison.
All opposition parties emphasised the fact that "the shameless act
of extradition" took place on St. Vitus' Day, the most important
Serb holiday. "That was the ultimate humiliation of the Serb
people," Seselj said.
The leaders of Milosevic's Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) today
held another news conference at which they slammed the extradition
of their leader describing it as "an unprecedented act in the
history of civilisation." A former Yugoslav foreign minister,
Zivadin Jovanovic, requested "the urgent establishment of the
government of national salvation."
A spokeswoman for the Yugoslav Left, the party headed by
Milosevic's wife Mira Markovic, believes Milosevic's hand-over "is
a humiliation for the heroic past of the Serbian people." A similar
statement was issued by the Party of Serb Unity, which was formed by
late war criminal Zeljko Raznatovic Arkan.
