The meeting "pointed to ways of defusing tensions, through a political solution of the crisis, in keeping with the constitutional and legal powers of the (Yugoslav) President," said the statement. BELGRADE, June 29 (Hina) - Yugoslavia's President Vojislav
Kostunica on Friday met the country's top military officials, while
Prime Minister Zoran Zizic tendered his resignation over the
extradition of former head of state Slobodan Milosevic to the Hague
war crimes tribunal.
Kostunica and Yugoslavia's top military officials discussed the
military and political situation in the wake of a decision of
Serbia's government to extradite Milosevic, said a statement
issued after the meeting.
The meeting "pointed to ways of defusing tensions, through a
political solution of the crisis, in keeping with the
constitutional and legal powers of the (Yugoslav) President," said
the statement.
Zizic told a news conference he had resigned to the office of
federal prime minister because Milosevic's extradition hurt the
country's dignity and because cooperation with the Hague tribunal
had caused rifts in the federal government.
Zizic is confident his resignation will not jeopardise the survival
of the federal state. He called on Kostunica to preserve, within his
competence, the Serbia-Montenegro alliance.
The federal government's current make-up will continue performing
its tasks until a new prime minister and federal government are
appointed.
