"Croatia is especially interested in developing relations with
Greece as good and as fast as possible, as Greece on one and Croatia
on the other side should be the factors of stability of the entire
region," Mesic told a news conference.
He said both sides had expressed identical views as to all issues
from today's talks.
This was confirmed by President Stefanopulos, who stressed that all
problems in the region should be solved on the basis of
international law and through dialogue, and that borders must not
be changed in any case.
The two heads of state said today's talks had paid special attention
to economic subjects, transport connections, particularly the
European corridor 10, and to the construction of the Adriatic-
Ionian Highway.
Stefanopulos supported Croatia's efforts to join both the European
Union and NATO.
Members of the press had only one question for the two heads of
state, namely if the extremists and nationalists active in this
region were acting autonomously or with assistance from the side,
and if their activity might lead to a change in state borders.
The Greek President said extremists were acting independently
given that "not one country in the region has supported... but
actually condemned them." Croatia's Mesic reiterated the joint
stance to the effect that borders were unchangeable, and added that
all heading into adventure, including war, would be defeated.
