ABOLISHMENT OF MILITARY SERVICE REQUIRES CONSENSUS - MINISTER

ZAGREB, May 23 (Hina) - "There is a world-wide trend to reduce the duration or abolish military service and Croatia wants to come closer to world standards," Defence Minister Jozo Rados said in Zagreb on Wednesday. He was unable to state if the abolishment of conscription was a definitive stance, but said it was an issue which required a political consensus on the state level. "I think we should not hesitate too much as to the issue of abolishing conscription, but we cannot pass a final decision without full consensus," Rados told a round table at the Defence Ministry which tackled the pros and the cons of conscription. The reduction of the duration of military service in Croatia or the complete abolishment of conscription will be given a more precise definition in a reconstruction bill which should be forwarded into parliamentary procedure in September.
