RAILWAY UNIONS SEEK HIGHER SALARIES

ZAGREB, May 4 (Hina) - Five Croatian Railways (HZ) unions said on Friday they requested that the average railway employee salary, currently 3,100 kuna ($369), be equated with the average salary in Croatia, between 3,600 and 3,700 kuna (about $435). The average railway employee salary lags behind the Croatian average by 14-15 percent, said Ivan Forgac, president of the Croatian Railway Employees' Union. The HZ unions have requested urgent agreements on salary increases given that according to a government draft agreement on the salary policy, salaries in the railways should be increased anyway. If their requests are ignored by the HZ management and the government, the HZ unions will meet to agree on further action, said Forgac. They expect a response from the government next week.(hina) ha sb
