ZAGREB, Jan 16 (Hina) - The Croatian Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has drawn up a programme for monitoring and diagnosing 'mad cow' disease, which should be adopted by the government this week, it was said at a ministry's new
conference on Tuesday. In line with the programme, all imported and domestic cows older than 30 months, which are to be slaughtered, will have to undergo the so-called quick tests. During 2001 alone, between 7,000 and 10,000 cows should be checked this way. The programme also envisages a safe system of gathering and incinerating so-called suspicious materials (bone meal), necessary personnel changes, and the equipment of the monitoring and diagnosing department. It is estimated that about 3.5 million kuna will be needed for the purchase of 200 testing kits. ZAGREB, Jan 16 (Hina) - The Croatian Ministry of Agriculture and
Forestry has drawn up a programme for monitoring and diagnosing
'mad cow' disease, which should be adopted by the government this
week, it was said at a ministry's new conference on Tuesday.
In line with the programme, all imported and domestic cows older
than 30 months, which are to be slaughtered, will have to undergo
the so-called quick tests. During 2001 alone, between 7,000 and
10,000 cows should be checked this way.
The programme also envisages a safe system of gathering and
incinerating so-called suspicious materials (bone meal),
necessary personnel changes, and the equipment of the monitoring
and diagnosing department.
It is estimated that about 3.5 million kuna will be needed for the
purchase of 200 testing kits.
The 'mad cow' disease has alerted the entire planet and shown how
important it is to produce environmentally safe food, and Croatia
has that opportunity, it was said at a round table organised by a
Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS) branch in Varazdin today.
The meeting pointed to the need of establishing an information
system which would follow a cow's path from its birth to the
consumer's table. In order to prevent the incidence of the 'mad cow'
disease it is necessary to stimulate the breeding of domestic cows
and their grazing, it was said at the round table.
