Ewe said that the parliament made and was still making significant
steps for Croatia's future, according to a statement issued by the
parliament's public relations office.
Tomac said Croatian citizens must face reality, namely that
Croatia's joining the EU depended on the improvement of the
political situation in the region. He said this is why it was
necessary to settle relations with Serbia and Montenegro in order
to be entitled to join the EU along with Romania and Bulgaria.
Avoiding to cooperate with the Balkans would only tie Croatia even
stronger to the Balkans, Tomac said.
Commenting on Bosnia-Herzegovina, Tomac said it was necessary for
Croatia and Serbia to cooperate with an integrated Bosnia and
advocate the strengthening of the central authorities in Sarajevo
and the change of the position of Bosnia's two entities. He stressed
that the right solution would be cantonal organisation with an aim
to protect the equality of all three peoples.
Tomac also pointed to the absurdity of ethnic cleansing trials
being held before the Hague-based war crimes tribunal and at the
same time the existence of Republika Srpska, which is the result of
a criminal policy, was being tolerated.
The two officials also discussed the political situation in Croatia
and neighbouring countries, the statement said.
