The fire-fighters' union leader, Mladen Magdic, said the main
reason for their protest is the 27.4-percent cut in funds to be
allocated for fire-fighting units in 2003 when they can count on
59.5 million kuna (eight million euros) from the budgetary funds.
The decreased means will hamper the regular work of the fire-
fighting units, Magdic said adding that at the rallies protesters
would warn the government and finance ministry of this situation.
