ZAGREB, Dec 6 (Hina) - "Djuro Djakovic" has disappeared as a holding company and its daughter companies have to salvage workers, Deputy Prime Minister Slavko Linic said on Friday following a meeting with union representatives from that company. #L# "There is work for you, while financial doubts need to be resolved by the board," Linic said at a meeting with representatives of the Croatian Metal Workers' Union (SMH). He added that the government would not find jobs nor settle the company's debts from budget funds. "I have nothing against your reverting to socialism, but I won't," he said. He accused union leaders of speaking on behalf of the company's board which he holds responsible for the state of affairs in "Djuro Djakovic", which before 1990 employed 16,000 workers. "It's a tragedy when the board sends unions to speak with the government," Linic said. Unions leaders rejected Linic's accusations, claiming that their sole interest was to save as many jobs as possible. According to SMH head Ivo Marjanovic, of the 20 companies within the holding, four are bankrupt and six are facing bankruptcy. He added that "Djuro Djakovic" would be faced with serious hardships if something was not done soon. Linic responded that "the problem lays in the fact that in Croatia bankruptcies are seen as Linic's 'hobby horse'... In the world a bankruptcy is a way of outwitting creditors". "Djuro Djakovic" currently employs about 3,500 workers, of whom 1,000 are employed in daughter companies that have already been privatised. (hina) sp/ha sb
