ZAGREB, Nov 22 (Hina) - Union leaders on Friday dismissed Deputy
Prime Minister Slavko Linic's claims that they "are spreading
untruths" by accusing the government of not paying wages to the
workers in Sisak's Ironworks, and that by staging protests in Sisak
they were fomenting "political disorder and chaos". #L#
After initiating bankruptcy proceedings in the Ironworks, the
government gave up on and left the company to the Commercial Court,
which proves the irresponsibility, immorality and incapability of
government officials, said Zdenko Mucnjak, president of the
Croatian Association of Trade Unions.
The leader of the Croatian Metal Workers' Union, Ivo Marjanovic,
also rejected accusations of politicking.
The Association of Workers' Trade Unions of Croatia (URSH) said
Linic was trying to shift the blame for the events in Sisak from the
government's economic, social and privatisation policy to the
Ironworks' unionists and employees.
The URSH slammed the government for "trying to shut up justifiably
disgruntled workers with police intervention".
The association said yesterday's clash involving workers and the
intervention police constituted an attack by the authorities on the
labour, social, and constitutional rights of Croatia's workers and
citizens, as well as an open threat to all future union action.
