The renovation of the station cost the Interior Ministry over 1.5
million kuna (201,000 euros).
Opening the police station, Lucin said that in the first ten months
of this year, Croatia had 70 percent less illegal crossings and that
the Interior Ministry considered renovating border supervision
complexes as a priority for this year.
"We are attempting to introduce European standards on our borders
as soon as possible. I believe that with better equipment and
training for border police, we will decrease illegal trade for high
priced goods, weapons and narcotics," Lucin added.
He also said that this year several vital international agreements
were signed, amongst which is one with the European Union based on
which "before the end of the year, all documents vital to resolving
border issues, border police, the migration policy and the policy
towards foreigners will be completed".
Commenting on questions by reporters about Serb policemen working
in Croatia but living in Serbia, Lucin said it was untenable to have
the "police of one country to live in another". He added he had set a
"reasonable deadline to resolve this issue".
He added that he did not "intend to decrease the number of national
minorities in the police, including the Serb, but that rights must
be applied to everyone equally".
