ZAGREB, Nov 18 (Hina) - The Croatian government's office for
cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the
former Yugoslavia (ICTY) has not yet officially contacted Mladen
Markac, whom ICTY investigators wish to interview in his capacity
as suspect, the government said in a statement on Monday. #L#
Under the procedure, the Croatian government and the said office
receive requests from The Hague and then call a person whom the
request refers to. The person can come to the government's office in
person and pick up the request and if this does not happen, the
request is being sent by mail.
By serving the request, the government completes its job and
everything else is conducted between the person and the Hague-based
tribunal, the government said.
Earlier today, retired Croatian Army General Markac was seen in the
Croatian parliament building where he allegedly held talks with
former Interior Minister Ivan Jarnjak. Markac, however, did not
give a statement.
The government said in a statement last Friday that a day before it
received from the ICTY Prosecutor's Office a request for assistance
in organising interviews with two persons in their capacities as
suspects.
The government said it could not reveal the names of the two persons
before informing them and receiving their consent to reveal their
names in public. This weekend, speculations that the two suspects
are Mladen Markac, former commander of Interior Ministry's special
force, and retired General Ivan Korade, former commander of the 7th
Guard Brigade, were confirmed.
General Korade took the ICTY request in the government's office for
cooperation with the tribunal this morning.
