The information about the British assistance in the set-up of the
centre, which is to be located in Butmir, outside Sarajevo, was
announced by the secretary-general of the Standing Commission for
Military Matters (SCMM), Stjepan Pocrnja, after talks with a NATO
delegation in Sarajevo on Wednesday.
Pocrnja told reporters that the centre, which would probably begin
functioning in January 2004, would accept soldiers from Bosnia as
well as other countries in the region.
Pocrnja added that at his talks with the NATO delegation, led by the
head of a security cooperation programme, Bruce MacLaine, there had
been no mention of the scandal about the export of military
equipment from a Bosnian Serb factory to Iraq.
An investigation into the scandal, involving the Bijeljina-based
"Orao" factory, is underway, and three managers have been taken
into custody on suspicion of being the most responsible for the
illicit trade with the Saddam Hussein regime.
