OSIJEK, Nov 11 (Hina) - By the end of November the State Council for
Competitiveness will draw up an analysis on the competitiveness and
prospects of the Croatian economy, and one can expect Croatia to lag
behind other countries, Croatian Employers' Association (HUP)
president Zeljko Ivancevic said. #L#
Speaking at a meeting with representatives of export companies from
Osijek-Baranja County, Ivancevic said the analysis would also
include suggestions to the government on how to solve problems
hampering competitiveness.
Ivancevic believes that in the past ten years Croatia has lost
around 50 percent of its former market in the European Union, while
other countries in transition have doubled the size of their EU
markets.
The HUP president believes that Croatia lacks an industrial policy,
as well as that an inefficient administration and bureaucracy
hamper competitiveness, and that the state should be less expensive
and reduce taxes in economy.
It has also been stated that the western European market has been
already conquered to a great extent, which is why producers from
small countries do not stand a good chance of success. Some
businessmen believe that it is, therefore, necessary to orient
one's exports to the former Yugoslav markets.
