THE HAGUE, Oct 17 (Hina) - Bosnian Croat Anto Furundzija, who is serving a ten-year prison sentence in Finland, appealed for clemency, i.e a shorter sentence, with the president of the U.N war crimes tribunal at The Hague, the ICTY
reported on Thursday.

serving a ten-year prison sentence in Finland, appealed for
clemency, i.e a shorter sentence, with the president of the U.N war
crimes tribunal at The Hague, the ICTY reported on Thursday. #L#
According to Finnish regulations, the appeal for clemency, namely a
shorter sentence, can be submitted after a half of the sentence has
been served, which in Furundzija's case is December 18, 2002.
The ICTY had sentenced Furundzija because, as the commander he
failed to prevent the raping and torturing of detained Bosniaks in
Central Bosnia in May 1993.
He was transfer to a Finnish prison two years ago.
The Bosnian Croat was arrested on December 18, 1997 and the time
spent in the ICTY's custody has been included in his sentence.
