WASHINGTON, Oct 16 (Hina) - The US Supreme Court rejected an appeal
lodged by Mirzo Kahvedzic against the Republic of Croatia for war
crimes, genocide, ethnic cleansing and terrorism. #L#
Kahvedzic, who lives in Sarasota in Florida sued Croatia at a US
County Court seeking compensation of US$24 million for personal
damages. He claimed that the Croatian Army and paramilitary units
destroyed his property in Odzak. The suit was rejected in that court
on the basis of Croatia's immunity as a sovereign state and so
Kahvedzic appealed to the US Supreme Court.
Croatia gave up its right to put an appearance before the Supreme
Court but resolutely rejected all counts of the indictment even
though it enjoys the immunity of a sovereign state.
