NEW YORK, Oct 11 (Hina) ? Friday?s resolution of the UN Security
Council is completely clear and leaves no doubt that the UN
Mission of Observers on Prevlaka (UNMOP) must leave the peninsula
by December 15 and its gradual withdrawal starts immediately,
Croatia?s Ambassador to the UN, Ivan Simonovic, told Hina on
Friday. #L#
"For the first time since it gained independence, Croatia will
achieve full control over its entire territory," Simonovic said,
adding that the resolution put an end to the "challenging of
Croatian borders". Simonovic believes that the successful
completion of the UN mandate opens new prospects for Croatia in
joining NATO and the European Union.
"A temporary transitional regime, which will go into force upon the
completion of the UNMOP mandate, leaves no room for fear of any kind
of instability? it is based on the principle of full respect for
international borders and reflects the wish to facilitate life,
communications and economic activity? simultaneously meeting
security requirements and taking into account the specific needs of
every country," Simonovic said.
A visit by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to Croatia, to take place
in the second half of November, will provide an opportunity to thank
the UN for its overall contribution to the establishment of peace
and security in Croatia, the ambassador said.
