NEW YORK, Oct 8 (Hina) - There is no reason why the UN Security
Council should not accept Secretary-General Kofi Annan's proposal
to end the UN mission of military observers on the Prevlaka
peninsula by Dec. 15 at the latest, Croatia's permanent ambassador
to the UN, Ivan Simonovic, said on Tuesday. #L#
Satisfied with the proposal Annan made in a report presented to the
Security Council today, Simonovic said this was the best
congratulations note Croatia could have received on its
Independence Day, marked today.
Simonovic said Annan was right in estimating that the termination
of the UN mandate on Prevlaka, a Croatian peninsula bordering on
Yugoslavia, marked the end of a difficult period for the wider
region.
The situation on Prevlaka does not constitute a threat to peace and
security, so UN observers are no longer necessary, Simonovic said.
He estimated that independent and integral Croatia was ready to
focus on new priorities, those of economic and social development.
The time of peace missions in Croatia is over, Simonovic said,
recalling that Croatian troops are participating in peace missions
in Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Kashmir, and soon in West
Sahara as well.
