ZAGREB, Oct 11 (Hina) - The Croatian Helsinki Committee for Human
Rights (HHO) Media Council has requested the government to
introduce the criminal act of obstruction of access to information
into announced changes to the Penal Code. #L#
In a statement issued on Friday, the HHO states that the Council has
proposed that the government introduce penalties for officials who
obstruct access to information in the possession of state bodies,
and introduce even stricter penalties for those destroying or
changing information to prevent their being made known.
The Council has also suggested that the government abandon
regulations on the protection of the dignity of the President of the
Republic because it believes that such regulations, even when they
exist in the legislation of some European countries, are the
remnants of the past and are only a dead letter as they have not been
implemented for decades. Legalising such regulations would limit
the freedom of information and damage the country's democratic
reputation, reads the statement.
