session on Friday, when it should debate an Hague war crimes
tribunal indictment against retired General Janko Bobetko. #L#
An agreement to debate the indictment on Friday was reached on
Tuesday at a meeting of parliament's Presidency, all parliamentary
benches, Prime Minister Ivica Racan and his deputy Goran Granic.
On that occasion it was also agreed that a joint commission should
be set up to monitor the parliamentary debate and prepare
conclusions which should help the government pass a final decision
on the Bobetko indictment.
The government has already pointed out that some parts of the
indictment are unacceptable and contrary to the Croatian
Constitution. It has, however, requested a legal confirmation of
its standpoints from the Constitutional Court, expected early next
week, after the parliamentary debate.
It is believed that tomorrow the Opposition will insist on also
tackling President Stjepan Mesic's recent address to the nation
regarding the Bobetko indictment, which the Opposition sees as a
distancing from the government.
The leaders of the ruling coalition today debated the Mesic
address. Even though it is claimed the meeting was convened to
harmonise views ahead of tomorrow's debate in parliament, one of
the coalition party leaders has conceded that Mesic's address was
debated and that the parties' leaders shared different views on the
matter.
