Last Sunday, fishermen from the two countries held a meeting in Umag
when they agreed on the extension of a moratorium on fishing in the
contentious section of Piran Bay by 23 September and on their next
meeting in Izola, Slovenia.
Daniele Kolec told reporters today that "it is pointless to lose
both time and efforts at the talks at which we know the Slovene views
and they know our views, but we lose our valuable time necessary for
earning bread for our families."
At the Umag talks on 15 September, Kolec turned down a Slovene
proposal that the Slovenes could fish by Lovrecica, and the
Croatians insisted on the boundary line which is the middle line in
Savudrija Bay, i.e. Piran Bay.
On that occasion Kolec said Croatian fishermen accepted the
Croatian-Slovene agreement on local border traffic and
cooperation, except its section referring to the commercial
fishing, given that "there is no interest in reciprocity, as
Croatian fishermen do not want to fish in the Slovene waters."
This Sunday Kolec said that as of 24 September, Croatian fishermen
would resume catching fish by the demarcation line, i.e. the middle
line in the said bay.
Another leader of local fishermen, Danilo Latin said he agreed with
Kolec's decision.
