Croatia's Justice Ministry on Friday stated that although it met
all conditions required by the Yugoslav Justice Ministry and had
secured all necessary measures for the physical protection of the
witnesses, Zagreb had received a note forwarded via the Yugoslav
Embassy.
The note sent from the Yugoslav ministry read that the five
witnesses, called to testify in the Lora case on 23 September before
the Split County Court, made their joint decision that at the moment
they were abandoning the plans for their arrival in Split.
The note made no mention of the reasons for the non-appearance of
the five witnesses, the Croatian ministry reported.
Five out of a total of 14 witnesses, summonsed to come from
Yugoslavia, should have taken the witness stand on 23 September in
Split where the county court is processing eight former military
police officers, indicted for war crimes committed in 1992 against
civilians in the former military jail called Lora.
