RIJEKA, Sept 12 (Hina) - The first on the indictment in the war
crimes trial to the so-called Gospic Group at the Rijeka County
Court, Tihomir Oreskovic, was released from detention after two
years on Thursday. #L#
Oreskovic had to be set free because the duration of detention as
stipulated by law expired today. According to April 2002 amendments
to the Penal Code, some crimes may warrant detention of up to four
years, but not war crimes.
Oreskovic did not make any statements to the media upon coming out
of jail.
His attorney Zeljko Olujic said there was "very strong indication"
that the decision on his client's release might be revised, in which
case he announced a strong action "at every forum of the world".
Following Oreskovic's release, only Mirko Norac and Stjepan
Grandic of the five accused for war crimes against civilians in the
Gospic area in the autumn of 1991 remain in custody.
Milan Canic was released to defend himself in freedom after not one
witness had charged him with the crimes from the indictment.
Oreskovic and Ivica Rozic were released because the maximum time of
detention expired. Grandic's two-year detention expires in
December and Norac's in February.
