SALZBURG, Sept 17 (Hina) - In order to join the Brussels club,
countries in transition must do their part, as should the European
Union, because unifying Europe is insufficiently fast and
effective, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said in Salzburg on
Tuesday. #L#
"Countries in transition should complete their part of the work,
but so should the European Union," Mesic said, stressing that
Europe was fed up with unifying, and countries in transition were
fed up with transition.
"Things are not proceeding fast and effectively enough for us to
achieve our strategic goals," Mesic said. "The strategic goal is
Europe's union," he added.
Europe bust be unified if it wants to be a partner to the United
States, Japan or China.
One of the factors of Europe's union today are national minorities,
Mesic said.
"National minorities were an apple of discord through all of
Europe's history .. now that Europe is unifying on the basis of
interests of the big and small, national minorities are starting to
be an amalgam of European unification," the Croatian president
asserted.
The Salzburg Summit has gathered about 600 participants who
discussed numerous political and economic issues during the two
days of the Summit.
The participants include heads of state, prime ministers,
ministers, parliamentarians, business people and representatives
of a large number of international organisations.
