In addition he said that he had received a response from his
Croatian counterpart Tonino Picula to his letter sent on Monday. As
Slovenia's news agency STA reported, Rupel estimated Picula's
response as surprising. Rupel further said that the letter was
written with a negative slant which did not give any motivation for
the continuation of political dialogue. Despite the tone, Rupel
said, Slovenia must continue with dialogue. Rupel, STA added, also
said that Picula had obviously not understood his letter.
The parliamentary foreign affairs committee held an urgent meeting
initiated by the party benches of the SDS and NSI. The meeting
discussed relations between Slovenia and Croatia in the light of
the latest events in Piran Bay and the case of Jozko Joras. The
committee called on all relevant bodies in Slovenia to undertake
all measures so that Slovene citizen and Piran councillor Jozko
Joras immediately and unconditionally be released from prison in
Croatia. In addition, as the STA reported, the Committee supports
the internationalisation of the case before the Council of Europe.
With regard to the border, the committee confirmed last year's
conclusions and expressed support to Slovenia's premier to meet his
Croatian counterpart as soon as possible, Nevertheless, the
committee asked that in any case the government collected all the
relevant documents necessary for international arbitration.
