BATINA, Aug 22 (Hina) - Although the Danube's water surge near
Batina on Thursday reached 730cm, services involved in the Osijek-
Baranja County Flood Crisis Centre expect that it will not be long-
lasting and will begin stagnating and falling. The monitoring and
flood prevention measures will continue until the surge stops. #L#
The County Flood Crisis Centre expects that the fall of the water
surge could occur faster than its rising, and that the centre's
maximum alertness will be necessary for another day or two, when the
highest surge should leave Croatian territory.
The water level of 750cm, when the proclamation of emergency
measures would be necessary, has not been reached.
When the level reaches 500cm, regular flood protection measures
will be rescinded and temporary alertness by water protection
services will be introduced. Other measures will be stopped, said
Karlo Seitz, the head of the flood protection office of Osijek's
branch of the Croatian Waters company.
