BELGRADE, August 2 (Hina) - The Serbian Radical Party leader,
Vojislav Seselj, on Friday handed in his candidacy to the Main
Electoral Commission for the presidential election in Serbia
scheduled for September 29. #L#
His party collected 13,643 signatures in support of his candidacy,
even though only ten thousand signatures were required.
"There is no force that can take away the victory from us at the
election. Our main aim is to defeat Miroljub Labus and make his
candidacy pointless," Seselj announced after submitting his
candidacy, stressing that he would be happy if Slobodan Milosevic
support him, as he believes Milosevic's backing would certainly
ensure his victory at the first round because all patriots would
concentrate their votes on him.
Several candidates have arisen for the forthcoming election and
opinion polls generally indicate that the best chances lie with the
Yugoslav deputy prime minister, Miroljub Labus.
If he should decide to candidate, the incumbent Yugoslav President,
Vojislav Kostunica, is given high hopes in the polls. Kostunica
will make his decision within the next ten days.
The latest poll which the Belgrade-based agency "Strateski
marketing", conducted on a sample of 1,574 respondents in 60
Serbian municipalities, indicates that Kostunica and Labus would
win the same percentage of votes with 22 per cent while other
politicians seem not to be a serious rival.
The ruling coalition DOS still has not decided which candidate it
will back because some parties in the coalition announced their own
candidates. More than likely the opposition Socialist Party of
Serbia could possibly candidate Slobodan Milosevic for the future
presidential election.
