OSIJEK, July 26 (Hina) - A member of the Croatian parliament and the
head of the Osijek-Baranja county branch of the Croatian Social
Liberal Party (HSLS), Vilim Herman, on Friday said he would vote for
the new government if it offered firm assurances for the
implementation of projects of the strategic importance for east
Croatia. #L#
Herman said at a news conference in Osijek that he would "act so
regardless of the party discipline," as "the interest of the region
he is representing is more important for him than the party
discipline."
The HSLS leadership has recently bound all its MPs to vote against
the new cabinet which will be proposed by the prime minister
designate, Ivica Racan, as this party describes such government as
illegitimate.
Herman said he had clearly notified the resigned ministers that he
would not support the following government if he could not receive
its assurances for the implementation of the strategic projects.
The vital projects for Slavonia and Baranja are currently the
construction of European corridor 5c from Budapest via Osijek and
Bosnia to the Croatian southern seaport of Ploce, the enlargement
of Osijek University and the establishment of the agricultural bank
in the biggest eastern Croatian city.
Herman added that he had already managed to ensure some funds for
the corridor in the 2002 state budget.
