He said the assistance referred to economic development and
democratic institutions.
Steiner, who arrived in Albania for a two-day visit today, also met
the incumbent Albanian President, Rexhep Meidani.
After the talks, the UN official said he had received support for
the continuation of the democratic process in Kosovo, adding that
progress in Kosovo was visible, particularly this year, and that
the people of Kosovo supported the UN policy.
Steiner also met former Prime Minister Pandeli Majko, who resigned
during the day. The ruling Socialist Party of Albania appointed its
leader Fatos Nano Prime Minister.
The Albanian authorities have asked Steiner to lower border taxes,
introduced by the UN mission to Kosovo, because the residents of
Albanian regions bordering Kosovo, who frequently visited Kosovo,
could not pay them.
Steiner and Albanian Economy Minister Ermelinda Meksi are expected
to sign an agreement on trade cooperation between Albania and
Kosovo.
