The arrest of Radovan Stankovic was announced this afternoon by the
French army Main Staff in Paris, after which the news was confirmed
by the SFOR command in Sarajevo and the interior ministry of the
Bosnian Serb entity.
The SFOR in Sarajevo said in a statement Stankovic was arrested in
Foca around 15:00 hours and that nobody was injured in the
operation.
Stankovic is on his way to The Hague, where he will be handed over to
the representatives of the International Criminal Tribunal for
former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
Stankovic is charged with grave violations of the international
humanitarian law, including the mass rape of Bosniak (Muslim) women
in the areas of Foca and Miljevina.
An ICTY indictment against eight Bosnian Serbs, including
Stankovic, charges the latter with having run a brothel in Foca with
imprisoned Muslim women and girls.
An investigation revealed that the women, including girls aged 12-
14, were all brutally raped and tortured by Bosnian Serb
paramilitary troops.
In the past 12 months the SFOR has arrested 26 persons indicted by
the Hague tribunal. Of a total of 103 indictees, 82 have been
brought to justice.
