The situations the government finds itself in are forced, Mesic
said after attending a ceremony marking the 150th anniversary of
the Croatian Chamber of Crafts.
The coalition government has to implement the programme that
parliament adopted, said the President.
The coalition parties may compete outside the government, but reach
consensus when deciding on courses of action, Mesic said. He added
the coalition partners had agreed as to the direction but were in
dispute as to concrete decisions. Those who disagree should leave,
he said.
The President believes there is a way out. He declined to speculate
as to further developments, saying it was too early for that and
that what lay ahead was the harmonisation of views and voting in
parliament. Croatia has constitutional solutions, he said, adding
that if and when he was asked, he would exert his constitutional
powers on time.
Asked about Croatia's relations with Libya, which is on the US list
of terrorist countries, Mesic said that Libya had settled its
problem regarding compensation for the families of the victims of
the Lockerby plane crash and the trials for the crime. Libya is no
longer among the countries accused of terrorism, he said.
Mesic mentioned three reasons for good Croatian-Libyan cooperation
- the return of companies (INA, Ingra) whose workers worked in
Lybia, the good Libyan oil, and the fact that Lybia was the first
non-European country to recognise Croatia.
