ZAGREB, June 19 (Hina) - The party benches of the ruling coalition

Democratic Union (HDZ) bench to set up a commission of enquiry to
investigate allegations by former state prosecutor, Radovan
Ortynski, about alleged ties between the government and organised
crime. #L#
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) bench will not support the
setting up of an enquiry commission, Gordana Sabol said, claiming
that the HDZ's request was made on unfounded sources.
Luka Trconic of the Croatian Peasants' Party (HSS) bench believes
that setting up such a commission would be counterproductive,
especially since the new state prosecutor, Mladen Bajic, had taken
over some of the documents that Ortynski based his claims on.
Vladmir Seks (HDZ) recalled that the former state prosecutor had
made serious allegations about collusion between the government
and organised crime. This cannot just be left at that because it
would leave a lasting suspicion that someone was afraid of such a
commission because they wished to cover something up, Seks said.
Only a commission of this type could clear any suspicion of the
present or former government, he added.
The parliament considered another HDZ proposal for a commission of
enquiry to investigate if transcripts taken from the President's
Office made during the time Franjo Tudjman was president, were
lawfully handed over to The Hague.
HDZ MP's said that the current president, Stjepan Mesic, handed
over the transcripts even though they were clearly marked as top
secret.
The parliament will continue its 23rd session on Thursday.
