The overnight stays climbed by 20 percent in the January-May
period, the minister informed the government at its session.
A rise of 62 percent was recorded in German tourists' overnight
stays. They were followed by Austrians and Slovenians.
Zadar County registered the biggest increase of 57 percent in the
number of room/nights, and its neighbouring county - the Sibenik
region - had good results as well. The third best county was
Istria.
Minister Zupan Ruskovic said data for June would show poorer
performance as some hotels were still being renovated and Croatia
had smaller accommodation capacities than in June 2001.
In addition to this, some religious holidays (connected with the
Easter time) were in May this year, and the World Football
Championships had an effect on the situation.
The government decided to keep the accommodation fees for 2003 at
the same level as in 2002. They cost between four and seven kuna
(approximately between 0.54 to 1 euro) per day.
The charges for the berth in marinas remain 400 kuna (55 euros)
annually.
