ZAGREB, June 19 (Hina) - The Croatian Justice Ministry has taken all
necessary security measures for the main hearing in the "Lora case"
trial held before the Split County Court, the Ministry said in a
statement on Wednesday. #L#
Ahead of the beginning of the main hearing, the Administration for
the Prison System, has taken all necessary measures, in cooperation
with the Interior Ministry, the Police Directorate, and the court,
to secure the undisturbed course of the main hearing. The measures
were taken on the initiative of Justice Minister Ingrid Anticevic
Marinovic, Josip Hehet, head of the Administration for the Prison
System, said in a statement.
According to Hehet, a coordinating body has been formed in order to
see that competent institutions assess the security situation and
supervise the conduct of the police, including court police, during
the trial.
Hehet said there had been no complaints against the work of court
police in the past seven days.
Over the past several days, the media speculated that witnesses
from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia would not appear in court
despite having received subpoenas because they had not been given
firm guarantees that they would not be insulted or attacked and that
criminal proceedings were not conducted against them.
Judge Slavko Lozina said on several occasions that witnesses had
been subpoenaed though diplomatic channels and that they had been
given security guarantees. His statement was confirmed by Supreme
Court President Ivica Crnic on Tuesday. The witnesses, however,
failed to appear in court on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In the so-called "Lora case", eight former military policemen are
indicted for war crimes against civilians in the Split-based
military detention centre Lora in 1992.
