Following talks with the chairman of the Bosnian presidency, Beriz
Belkic, Kok told journalists that the Dutch government remained
committed to its previous pledge of assisting Bosnia-Herzegovina,
and this was largely due to the tragedy in Srebrenica.
He said that the events in Srebrenica were a true drama. The
Netherlands cannot undo them, however, there are people
responsible for them and those people should be brought to trial,
Kok said.
Wim Kok's government offered to resign following a report by the
Dutch Institute for war documents about the events in Srebrenica in
1995, which led to the massacre of around 7,000 Bosnian Muslims by
the Bosnian Serb army.
A spokesman for the outgoing government stated that Kok's visit did
not necessarily mean an apology for the conduct of Dutch UN troops
responsible for protecting Srebrenica as a UN zone.
