BELGRADE, May 17 (Hina) - Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica
said on Friday that a statement by a US official that the Yugoslav
authorities should apologise for the "genocidal politics" of their
predecessors was an indication of new demands before activating US
assistance. #L#
Senator Joseph Bidden, the president of the foreign affairs
committee of the US Senate, said that the new Yugoslav government
should apologise for the genocidal politics of its predecessor to
Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo.
"It would, of course, be senseless and irresponsible to accept
being branded as a genocidal country and a genocidal nation, which
Bidden attributes to us, in exchange for the second instalment of US
aid. At the same time, this does not mean that we underestimate
assistance from the US and its attitude towards our participation
in international financial organisations," Kostunica stated in an
article written for the NIN weekly.
Bidden's statement should be treated as a "distant indication or
warning" that in October Yugoslavia could be presented with some
more demands before a law on US assistance comes into force,
Kostunica says.
