ZAGREB, May 16 (Hina) - The reconciliation process between the

The education ministry did not appoint its member to the Peace
Council in the defined period, so the reconciliation fell through,
the union's president, Andrija Puljevic, told Hina on Thursday.
"That's an additional reason for the strike which has the support of
90 percent of union members and will commence on Monday in 350
secondary schools", Puljevic said.
The union, which has some 12,000 members of about 20,000 employed in
secondary schools, is asking that a collective agreement be
supplemented to include a Christmas bonus and holiday pay amounting
to US$441.71 and a gift for children amounting to about US$50.
The ministry's negotiation team does not wish to negotiate these
demands, claiming the issue of material rights was resolved through
the Basic Collective Agreement for Public Servants.
The announced strike was not supported by two smaller secondary
school unions because, as they said, the demands set by the
Independent Union were unclear and unrealistic.
The payment of material rights that the Independent Union is
requesting would cost the government over US$18.40 million, the
smaller unions said.
