The HDU's constitutive assembly was held in Sarajevo in the
presence of about 50 party members. Miro Grabovac-Titan was elected
the party's first president.
Grabovac was until now the HDZ's whip in the Bosnian parliament's
House of Representatives. Together with two other HDZ MPs, he on
Tuesday announced he was leaving the party since he could not
contribute to improving the position of Bosnian Croats as an HDZ
member.
Besides representatives of the international community, the
founding of the HDU was hailed by representatives of other
political parties, including the Social Democratic Party of
Bosnia-Herzegovina and the New Croat Initiative.
The party's basic aims, as cited in a decision on the founding of the
HDU, include the fight for an integral and independent Bosnian
state in which the rights of every individual and nation will be
represented and the promotion of the interests of the Bosnian Croat
people. The HDU's main office will be located in Sarajevo.
