SARAJEVO, May 13 (Hina) - The Bosnian Federation government on
Monday called on all former and current members of the army and
police who have any information about secret weapons or ammunition
warehouses, to give it to local authorities or the SFOR. #L#
The call followed a government session at which members discussed
the situation after a discovery of a large amount of secretly stored
shells at several locations in Mostar.
According to information by the SFOR, more than 6,000 shells of 120
millimetre calibre have been found. In Mostar's tobacco factory
alone, 80 tonnes of shells were found, which would have been
sufficient to have formed a crater 100 metres in diameter and
completely destroy not only the factory, but also all surrounding
residential buildings.
The Bosnian Federation Defence Ministry knew nothing about the
existence of weapons and ammunition discovered recently in Mostar
by SFOR troops, federal Deputy Defence Minister Ferid Buljubasic
said on Saturday. However, he warned that the previous government
knew about it, since everything indicated this was a well-organised
job.
Buljubasic mentioned the possibility of plans for the shells to be
sold, but SFOR chief commander General John Sylvester told
reporters he did not believe such a thing had been planned.
The investigation into the weapons warehouses in Mostar is carried
out by Herzegovina-Neretva Canton police. Special federal Defence
Ministry teams were given the task to check out 58 locations in the
Bosnian Federation in which weapons or ammunition had been produced
during the war in Bosnia.
