This award is given annually for literature, music, visual arts,
architecture, and the humanities.
This year's winners hail from Croatia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia,
Poland, and Romania.
Presenting the awards, Winckler said the states of eastern and
south-eastern Europe proved to be equally important as bigger
European states and were a part of Europe's large cultural
heritage.
Fabrio said he hoped his award would contribute to Croatia's
success in the world. Previous Croatian winners include Miroslav
Krleza, Ivo Franges, Zdenko Skreb, and Viktor Zmegac.
