ZAGREB, April 24 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament relieved Radovan Ortynski of chief state prosecutor duties on Wednesday, not based on his resignation but Article 55 of the Law on the State Prosecutor's Office, which refers to
dismissal for failure to execute legal authorities. This means Ortynski will not be able to stay at the State Prosecutor's Office.
ZAGREB, April 24 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament relieved Radovan
Ortynski of chief state prosecutor duties on Wednesday, not based
on his resignation but Article 55 of the Law on the State
Prosecutor's Office, which refers to dismissal for failure to
execute legal authorities. This means Ortynski will not be able to
stay at the State Prosecutor's Office. #L#
The decision was made after the parliamentary majority adopted an
amendment moved by the ruling coalition's five parties to relieve
Ortynski of duty under said law and not the resignation he tendered
previously.
Ortynski will thus "have to look for a new job," as Mato Arlovic of
the Social Democrats said on Monday on behalf of the ruling
coalition.
The aforementioned Article 55 stipulates that the chief state
prosecutor may be relieved of duty if he fails to demand launching
disciplinary proceedings for cases envisaged by law.
Last week parliament rejected an annual work report for the State
Prosecutor's Office submitted by Ortynski, who said in parliament
later that he was being dismissed by "organised crime, which has its
people in politics, the judiciary, the prosecution, and the
media."
Following several days of consultations among the ruling
coalition's five benches, Ortynski's resignation was turned down.
Parliament's Judiciary Committee will consider a request, put
forward by the opposition benches, for the establishment of a
commission of inquiry which would probe Ortynski's allegations.
