ZAGREB, April 22 (Hina) - Most parliamentary benches of Croatia's
ruling five-party coalition do not support the establishment of a
commission which should investigate claims by resigned Chief State
Prosecutor Radovan Ortynski on collusion between politics, the
judiciary and the media and organised crime, Mato Arlovic of the
Social Democratic Party (SDP) said on Monday. #L#
Should it be proposed that Ortynski be replaced, not because of the
resignation he tendered, but because he failed to perform his
duties in line with his powers, Ortynski would not be able to remain
at the State Prosecutor's Office, Arlovic told reporters after a
meeting of the coalition's parliamentary benches that was held
behind closed doors.
The SDP official said that most parliamentary benches of the ruling
coalition did not support the establishment of the commission,
which the Opposition believes should be formed to investigate
claims Ortynski made in parliament last week.
The Social Liberals (HSLS), whose stand on the matter was not known
until this evening, does not support the proposal either, but does
believe, like other ruling benches, that Ortynski's claims should
be investigated and the truth established, Arlovic said.
So far, only the Croatian Peasants' Party (HSS) has supported the
proposal on the commission of inquiry.
The decision on whether or not to establish the commission will be
made at tomorrow's meeting of all parliamentary benches, both those
of the ruling coalition and the Opposition.
